Peugeot 308CC tested

When it comes to convertibles, I’m not exactly the target market. In fact I’m about as comfortable in one as a prickly pear at a balloon party. I hate the whole hair blown forward, scalp a nuclear shade of crimson thing. And then there’s that ‘painfully exposed’ feeling of waiting at a busy robot with the roof down, like you’ve arrived at school in your pyjamas, again. But all it really takes is a topless evening cruise down a country lane with an affable companion to realise that there are times when a convertible can be motoring nirvana. Therein lies the appeal of the folding hardtop – the ability to transform from a regular coupé to a full-blown convertible in a 20-second flex of the forefinger. It’s an idea that Peugeot first traded on back in the 1930s, and reintroduced in 2001 with the 206CC. They’ve since gone on to sell some 650 000 CCs in various guises worldwide – popular enough to get nearly every manufacturer flipping lids in rapid response.
