Porsche has confirmed that it will produce electric sports cars in the future, this after the firm has already made its intentions clear with the 911 GT3 R Hybrid racecar and the 918 concept seen in Geneva earlier this year.
Starting in 2011, Porsche will commence testing three Porsche Boxster based vehicles in order to gain preliminary data on the efficiency and effectiveness of electric power as a source of drive for future Porsche products.
Michael Macht, the President and Chief Executive Officer of Porsche AG, sees this contribution made by Porsche as absolutely essential. “We will definitely be offering an electric sports car in future. But such a concept only makes sense if it offers performance and a cruising range comparable to that of a sports car today.”
For the moment though Porsche is still committed to its hybrid projects as well, namely the Cayenne and Panamera with the Panamera S to feature a hybrid system come the beginning of 2011.
