For far too long, Subaru’s been a brand exclusively synonymous with rally-spec sedans and off-road friendly wagons. However, as the Impreza hatchback proves, they’re dead set on diversification with the ultimate aim of broadening their customer base. To this end they will showcase two key future elements – hybrid technology and more attractive styling – at this year’s Tokyo Motor Show in the form of the Hybrid Tourer Concept. Of course Subaru’s usual USP, which marries a horizontally-opposed engine to symmetrical all-wheel drive, provides the technological backbone to which is added two electric motors and lithium-ion batteries. The world’s first hybrid boxer drivetrain is packaged within an elegantly styled large hatchback bodyshell heavily reminiscent of Alfa’s Brera (at least from the rear three quarter view). Access to the luxuriously minimalist four-seater cabin is via massive gullwing doors. The petrol engine is a development of Subaru’s familiar 2.0-litre direct injection, turbocharged boxer mated to a Subaru-developed Lineartronic automatic transmission.
