The pre-launch hype for the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG sportscar has just had another chapter added to it with the announcement of a pilot phase, electric drive version. Four electric motors, with a combined power output of 392kW and a max. torque of 880Nm, mounted near the wheels, transmit the power. The electric SLS AMG incorporates a 400-volt, liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery. Merc claims the all-wheel drive SLS AMG electric accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in around 4 seconds, or almost as quickly as its petrol engined, 6.3-litre V8 sister. Quite interestingly, the release makes no mention of estimated range - obviously not great if you're making use of the performance potential. Does an electric supercar get your arm hairs tingling?

You won't hear it. That's for sure. And at a four second 0 - 100kph you won't see it either. Pedestrians beware!
