Baby, baby Aston?
I realize that cars are for the most part a male obsession. We obsess about looks, cleanliness, engine size, performance, power, handling and many other car specifications smothered with jargon that most women are simply not interested in.
I don’t profess to understand the female psyche, far from it. I have however, in my brief existence on this planet come to understand that women…actually you know what I don’t understand and probably never will.
If there is one car manufacturer in the world that could fulfill both the male and female prerequisite for what a beautiful car should look like it would have to be Aston Martin. What man doesn’t want to be 007 and what better way than owning a DB9 or DBS? That and what guy wouldn’t want a stonking great V8 or V12, two seater supercar parked in their garage? And Ladies, I ask you, is there a sexier more voluptuous sport scar on sale today?
Now unless you’re an oil tycoon or a strip club tycoon for that matter then you will most likely be relegated to a life of bland VW’s, Toyota’s and Opel’s and maybe the odd shmancy Bee Emm or Merc. Aston Martin ownership? Unlikely.
That might change in the future though, although don’t expect a low slung V12 supercar, instead think of a super mini city runabout called the Cygnet. If the Aston Martin V8 Vantage is the ‘baby’ Aston in the range, then the Cygnet will definitely be the baby baby, itsy bitsy (clasping thumb and index finger together) Aston Martin in the range.
It is only a concept and Aston Martin call it a new luxury commuter concept, which will “Offer customers a distinctive, intelligent and exclusive solution for urban travel in style and luxury.”
‘Exclusive’ should be taken into context though, as the Cygnet is based on the up-and-coming Toyota iQ. Don’t expect a simple skin graft of Aston Martin’s name onto Toyota’s little city car though.
The ‘Cygnet’ concept represents a creative, environmentally conscious solution, being small, yet with presence – and highly fuel efficient, now combined with the prestige of Aston Martin’s luxury brand ownership.
Aston Martin, the world leader in exclusive niche engineering is collaborating on this concept with Toyota the world leader in volume, quality and reliability. Although vastly different in size, Toyota and Aston Martin share the philosophy of engineering excellence and innovation underlined by a strong passion for cars.
Aston Martin Chief Executive, Dr Ulrich Bez said: “Now is the right time for Aston Martin to take this first bold step to embark on this special project - made possible with the support of an organisation of Toyota’s stature and capability and the intelligent design and perfect city car package of the iQ.”
Let’s be honest if you owned one of these, no one will be able to argue the fact that you do indeed own an Aston Martin and for me that would be enough.

Toyota? & Aston Martin....
I applaud Aston Martin for their initiative to enter this market!
One can only hope that the Aston Martin brand will not be compromised whilst entering this market. My honest opinion is that Toyota will be a compromise, especially if one will take time to ponder the effects of the latest 'Call-backs'... It will take quite some time for Toyota to recover to their previous position.
Aston Martin MUST please reconsider their collaboration with Toyota...! There are other car manufacturers to consider. Even Jaguar or BMW or even Audi with their A1 series, launching soon.
It took so long to make this decision, that they might as well take a little longer to make the right one....
